If you want to get back to the basics of drag racing - real grassroots heads up, no breakout, run-whatcha-brung racing - plan to make a stop at Midway Dragstrip. Every week Midway runs a program that is so much fun and so exciting, they had to get Stagin' Steve LeTempt of IHRA fame to do the PA announcing - and even Steve has a hard time keeping up.

Midway is an 1/8-mile IHRA track located just outside of Greelyville, South Carolina. Their weekly program features bracket racing, grudge racing, junior dragsters, and the very exciting 10.5 inch Outlaw/Limited class. It's already a great facility, and owner Eddie Barrett already has plans to continue to improve it for both racers and spectators.

Track manager Todd Tribble has managed to combine a fun and friendly atmosphere with a well-run program that has racers very excited about coming to the track. Todd and Steve invited DRR to visit Midway earlier this month, and we really enjoyed a great night of racing (not to mention one of Mama's two-handed, three napkin cheeseburgers).

Fun and friendly, yes - but make no mistake about the fact that the racing at Midway is very serious. Steven Ward is a regular competitor in Midway's ATV class, running a stretched and lowered custom chassis on his ATV so as not to give anything up to the competition. And the reigning queen of the junior dragster class, Lauren Epps, will strap a 00 light on you almost every round. She's just 11 and is already running 83 mph in the 1/8th mile. Look out for her in Top Dragster in a few years.

The test and tune racers at Midway run the gamut from Rusty Bochette and his 1973 Vega funny car to Felicia Hastings' 97 street-strip Camaro. Bochette and Andy Borhis were at Midway to make some shakedown runs in their vintage Vega flopper. It features a King Cox chassis out of Pomona, California and is powered by a W.C. Scarborough big block Chevy with nitrous.

Felicia just moved from the bleachers to the driver's seat, diving into the bracket wars with her Camaro. With the help of Larry Ethridge at Low Country Classics in Georgetown, SC, Felicia's got the Camaro running strong. Her new hobby is still a bit of a secret to her husband. The first night she went racing she told him she was at Tupperware party. The night we were there she was supposed to be Christmas shopping.

Even with all this action - as well as some very serious grudge racing -the stars of the show at Midway this night were the 10.5 inch tire cars. The basic rules are 10.5 inch slicks, one power adder (nitrous is the favorite), and NO wheelie bars. It's that last rule that makes these cars such fan favorites, but low 5 second runs at more than 130 mph help too. In case you're not well versed on your 1/8th mile times, that's equal to very low 8-second times in the quarter.

Donna and Doug Westmoreland came down from Rock Hill, SC to run at Midway. Donna drives the car and says, "It's wild. It can be a ride". Donna and Doug have been very successful with their very clean Camaro, which features the stock suspension and interior, and a Gene Fulton 565 ci Chevy.

If you needed proof about Donna's statement, all you had to do was watch Ellison Williams' qualifying pass. Ellison's beautiful 69 Camaro launched straight with the wheels up, but when it came down the rear tires unloaded and the car started to fishtail wildly. It was only a spectacular driving job by Ellison that kept him out of the wall and away from the timing blocks.

"It's something to expect with these 10 inch tire races, you hope not to do it, but expect it," Ellison said later. He would know, as he's been racing in this type of class for a while now on the Coastal Carolina Racing Association (CCRA) circuit. CCRA is hoping to make Midway a stop on their 2002 schedule, which should please Ellison greatly. In three trips to Midway he's got a win and two runner up finishes. One of those runner ups was on December 8th when Ellison lost in the finals to Todd "Action" Jackson. Todd was the man to beat all night. He took the number one qualifying spot with a 10.5 track record of 5.207. But that record didn't last long as he reset it to a 5.196 during eliminations.

If there's a fan favorite of the fan favorites, it might just be Rick Crawford and his 1972 Buick. All night I heard about how Rick literally scraped the bumper last time out, and when he pulled to the line for his first qualifying run, I saw that no one was exaggerating. Rick's car REALLY likes to pull wheelies, and Rick really likes to drive wheelies. It makes for a great show.

Rick and his friend Robert Morris (who supplied the pictures for this article) are going into new territory for Buicks. They were told by some "experts" that the Buick motor couldn't handle nitrous, but they have proven the experts wrong.
